Why use it
This is the quickest route for a bag of clothes, and the one most people walk past without noticing. The council places textile containers on the street and inside municipal buildings across the city, and the interactive map linked from its page shows the nearest one. Everything textile goes in, the council says, whether or not it can be used again: clothes, shoes, accessories and household textiles such as sheets and towels. Put it in a closed plastic bag, which keeps it clean for sorting. The companies contracted to run the service decide where it goes. The council estimates that about 15% is good enough to be worn again and about half is recycled into new textile, and the rest goes to treatment plants. Among the authorised operators it names Recumadrid, a work-integration company. If something is still in good condition, the council also suggests giving it to someone who needs it or to a charity, which is the better outcome when it fits.
